02 Dec Designer Interview ~ Midnightsky Fibers
One of the wonderful benefits of participating in the Indie Design Gift A-Long on Ravelry is that I’ve have the opportunity to ‘meet’ several of the other participating designers. While the internet has opened up a greater world for us and our work, many of us are physically isolated from each other and our customers. I thought you might enjoy getting to know some of these designers too, so I am beginning a series of designer interviews today. I have 8 interviews lined up for you and will be posting a couple each week through December 23rd.
My first ‘interviewee’ is Jenn Wisbeck and she is known on Ravelry as Midnightsky. Jenn self-publishes patterns and sells her hand dyed yarns under her Midnightsky Fibers label. So without further ado….let’s meet Jenn…..
Tell us a bit about yourself – Hi! I’m Jenn from Midnightsky Fibers. My current obsession is knitting hats- big hats, small hats, colorwork, lace, and everything inbetween.
How did you get started with selling your designs? I originally started selling knitting patterns to go with the naturally dyed handspun yarns I made. From there, designing took a front seat- especially once it became possible to easily sell patterns online.
What do you see as your design style? Simple, easy to knit patterns that are fun to knit. Most of my designs make great travel and gift knitting projects, which is the type of knitting I really like to do!
What influences your designs? The color and texture of yarns play a big role in my designs. I live in the PNW, and the casual/outdoorsy style comes through for a lot of what I make.
What do you enjoy most about designing? The challenge of designing is what keeps me interested- finding new ways to use traditional patterns, using unusual construction techniques, and the fun of choosing just the right yarn to tie it all together.
Do you have any upcoming projects you can share or give us a sneak peek of? People following me on Google Plus or Facebook often get sneak peeks of what I am working on. (You can find Jenn on Google+ here: httpss://plus.google.com/+JennWisbeck/posts, and on Facebook here: httpss://www.facebook.com/midnightskyfibers)
Do you get to do much knitting for yourself? Yep- though mostly, I knit hats when I am not working on pattern samples. Hats are a great way to try out new stitch patterns and play with different yarns.
What prompted you to participate in the Indie Design GAL on Ravelry? The GAL is a great chance for so many designers- big and small- to work together. I was really excited to see how it would work out- and it is going fantastically.
Has the GAL met your expectations? Yes, and then some! It has been very fun to see so many designers working together.
Would you like to see the GAL become an annual event? Yes- it has been quite fun to participate in!
Where can folks see and/or buy your designs? You can find Midnightsky Fibers patterns on my website, as well as on most major ebook and epattern retailers. A list of the major places: Midnightsky Fibers – About
While Jenn is currently focusing on hats – I particularly like her Circle Vest and Treescape (fingerless gloves) patterns.
Thank you Jenn for taking the time to let us get to know you a bit better!
Happy Knitting ~ Jean
